What is Basic Education?

The Basic Education department at Skagit Valley College offers courses to help you get started, whether you have been away for years or have not finished high school. Our courses provide the foundation to improve your reading, writing, and math skills, learn English or improve your English language skills, and various pathways to attain a high school diploma or GED®.

Our Basic Education program offers courses in the following:

  • College and Career Bridge
  • High School Completion, GED Exam Preparation
  • English Language Acquisition
  • English for Academic Purposes
  • INVEST

Knowledge is power, and education changes lives. No matter where you are at this moment or where you have been, the Basic Education department is here to support you in enhancing your abilities and skills.

Best of all, classes are just $25 a quarter, saving you hundreds of dollars in tuition. We even have waivers if you qualify!

What we offer

Our courses will help you:

  • Improve your English language skills
  • Earn a high school diploma or GED. GED courses available in Spanish and English.
  • Improve your skills in math, writing, computer basics, and reading. Math and computer classes available in Spanish and English.
  • Start earning college credit and prepare for career training.

The cost is only $25 per quarter for tuition. You may take more than one class per quarter at no extra cost. A tuition waiver is available for those who qualify.

Designed for

  • Adults returning to school after a break of several years, or those who are seeking to improve academic skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, math, computer use, and academic skills before starting college-level courses.
  • High school-aged students who would like to pursue college education prior to graduating from high school.
  • Justice-involved students who are transitioning out of incarceration.
  • New English language learners or those who are looking to improve their English language skills.
